Of Watergate Politics, Machiavellianism and Outright Dictatorship

This weekend, we were treated to some very embarrassing revelations about politicians spying on others. Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is apparently being stalked by Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The man being used in this game is billionaire legislator and drug-dealer, John Haroun Mwau. The game involves paying individuals working for the Vice President and his surrogate, Hon Mutula Kilonzo to leak political secrets to the prime Minister’s side.

This is not the first time this is happening. Last year, the Odinga campaign employed the same dirty tricks against Kalonzo. They hacked his campaign website and redirected all traffic to their own. They even went ahead to attack his foundation’s website after breaking into the physical offices and making away with computers.

Some people within the Odinga camp will argue that this trickery is within the permissible radius of political hard- tackling. The truth, however, is that this is sheer corruption. Someone who aspires to be President should understand the need for upholding not just integrity in the conduct of his political life, but also the appearance of the same. This kind of politics is no different from the Watergate shenanigans that led to the impeachment of President Richard Nixon. It is neo-Watergate politics at play.

When Hon Raila and his people descend to this level of despondence in their pursuit of power, the question that comes to mind is: What do they want to do with the power? Why should we not be apprehensive of the ODM ringleader when his modus operandi is defined by such archaism?

It is this apprehension that has led colleagues of Raila Odinga’s to publicly question the motives behind this runaway Machiavellianism;

PNU nominated Member of Parliament and Ford Kenya chairman, Musikari Kombo, last year warned Kenyans of an individual he called One Dangerous Man. This was not something out of the blues. We had been severally warned before of how we should never let some people come close to power for the obvious reason that they may never know what to do with that power besides abusing it.

Cyrus Jirongo was more blunt; “Raila is confused….and it goes to show these ODM people should never be allowed to come close to state power.”

ODM presidential running mate, Musalia Mudavadi, on his part warned of the reincarnation of Idd Amin Dada. This was after he was subjected to some strong-arm tactics which he eventually succumbed to and agreed to live in political submission.

It is easy to dismiss some of these sentiments as the usual political rhetoric, but since Raila Odinga has found his way to some executive power of sorts, it would be proper for us to highlight some glaring examples of abuse of power;

After the formation of the Grand Coalition Government, some Members of Parliament started a crusade seeking to be allowed to form an opposition caucus in Parliament. Prime Minister Raila was opposed to this move. To be fair to him, his fellow party leaders, President Kibaki and Vice President Kalonzo were similarly opposed. But the distinction was how each voiced his opposition.

While Kibaki urged MPs not to grumble for not being appointed ministers because they could ‘become ministers tomorrow’, Kalonzo hinged his argument on the need to preserve and protect the new-found cohesion in Parliament. Raila on the hand, told his party MPs that such a move would ‘deny him a majority in Parliament’ (And he repeated this in Kitale yesterday); a majority he would seriously need to sabotage government projects in the event things do not go as per plan.

But it did not stop there. He went on to remind them that they could lose their seats if they attempted to regroup themselves as an opposition outfit. That was a shameful threat especially when you consider that he had used the same MPs to install what he considered to be a user-friendly Speaker. In the name of fairness, why should Members of Parliament be threatened by an individual who has changed political parties more times than anybody else in Kenya? Do we need to remind anyone that he himself had been elected on a Narc ticket in 2002 before forming an LDP opposition within government? This LDP ‘wing of government’ went on to be converted to ODMK and then ODM. I don’t recall him seeking a fresh mandate in between these defections. Where he got the moral authority to lecture people on these matters, I do not know.

The Prime Minister a couple of weeks ago kicked off a campaign to have judicial officers sign the kind of performance contracts civil servants sign. This is another classical case of dictatorship. Everybody understands that there should be a clear separation of power among the three arms of government. The executive’s attempt to lord it over the judiciary is quite frankly, draconian. It is an expedient attempt to pack the judiciary with puppet officers. In the same way Members of Parliament cannot be answerable to the executive, the judiciary shouldn’t.

While supporters of the ODM will always be quick to defend their party leader (It is typical of the haphazard way the ODM conducts its politics), the objective mind will acknowledge that he has often times acted in improper fashion.

Vikii, those are very serious accusations you make. ODM is the biggest party in parliament. I do not know(and do not wish to know) the exact number of MPs in kalooser's party - but I do know some are already rebelling against him. Kalooser will always be a loser. Losers always try to find anything to cling to. He is clinging to the silly and stupid 'spy' propaganda today. I don't know what Mr 24-hour-economy will cling to tomorrow.

Vikii, judge Kalonzo's mandate from Kenyans by the turnout that voted for him. For God's sake, unless he plans to poison Kibaki and turn Kenya into a dictatorship, Kalonzo has no chance of ruling Kenya. Not while Raila lives anyway.

I am not surprised at all. I have not said anywhere that Kalonzo will be President and that is not the crux of the issue here.

You either respond to the specific issues raised or shut up.

I will summarise that for you;

1. Has Haroun Mwau denied that he, working in concert with Raila Odinga, has been spying on Kalonzo Musyoka?
More importantly, is that an ethical way of doing politics? Why was Nixon impeached then if it is perfectly in order?

2.Was Kalonzo's website hacked last year? Were people not redirected to another website? Did the Odinga campaign explicitly distance itself from these shenanigans? And again, is that ethical?

3.Do we need an opposition in government? Does the need for an opposition disappear the moment Raila Odinga is ushered into government?
Assuming the answer is yes, should we premise such an argument on Raila's myopic need for always having a majority in Parliament? Do you honestly think Raila Odinga is morally qualified to issue these unfortunate threats to Members of Parliament? And while on it, if this is not dictatorship, then what is?

4.What is your position on Judges and magistrates signing performance contracts that are assesed by the political executive? What gives the executive arm of government the right to police the other arms? Why should they not go ahead and police the legislature as well? If someone has been the loudest in branding judges 'cronnies' of the appointing authority, does that not make them bigger cronies if they know they can be discarded more easily? Again what is the new definition of dictatorship?

5. And finally, why should we not collate views from Kenyans about the kind of constitution they want? What is Raila Odinga scared of? At what point did 'people-drivenism' lose meaning?
While still on this, why is Raila so scared of the civil society? Why is he attempting to shut the door on them when it comes to Constitution making? Why does he always change positions so expediently? I mean, he should not be flip-flopping on matters of bedrock political principle like constitution-making. This potrays the Machiavellian perspective in the discussion.

Again this is not about whether Kalonzo will be President or not. That is a question Kenyans will answer when the time comes. And believe you me they will answer it once and for all.

For now, please address the issues raised and if you cant, stay the crap away.

you are mixing up facts and issues with your own rather blunt dislike for RAO and then presenting a case

issues of spying, that has been going on for decades and is manifest through the so called moles and other shrewd intruments. we know for sure that the govt through its various agencies also spies on these parties so lets stop pretending that this is a new issue. but the issue you mention is a specific turf war between Mwau and Kalonzo which Mwau has not denied but instead said that on finding out that Kalonzo was spying on him, deployed counter measures that were more elaborate (in Mwaus own words). RAO does not feature in this other than your dislike and the fact that Mwau has chosen to work with RAO rather than SKM

kalonzo website being hacked shows two things, first he should employ more qualified IT people who understand IT security better, also shows what mediocre leadership we are to expect if he cant maintain a simple secure web page. secondly its like blaming bill gates for numerous spyware and viruses out there, get serious bro, any 15 year old can hack an insecure website.

opposition in govt - thats quite a strange concept both in semantics as well as in practice, you can have a govt and an opposition. members in either camp proscribing to ideals of the other are commonly refered to as rebels and if there is persistent disagreement then it means they do not agree with party policies/ideologies etc and should do the next best thing which is resign and join the party whose ideals reflect their own better. of course there are many areas where people disagree but the general party principles and ideology should be the guiding factor. playing watchdog does not require an opposition but militancy against corruption, etc, and these are in all party manifestos so they are not bringing anything new. i would believe these guys a little more if they introduced structures within the party such as oversight committees or efficiency and monitoring sub-committees. that would show maturity and respect for their parties and constituents. only if they can demonstrate constantly hitting obstacles would a fully fledged opposition become a necessity.

judges like any other worker or service provider need performance evaluation, if your beef is with who will review their performance thats ok, so put forward your suggestion on who should. its weak to say that it should not be the executive (in your case i assume to mean PM) whereas you and i both know judges serve at the whim of the executive (president) and he can dismiss or appoint at will. judges would have to be evaluated by the executive, parliament, judiciary (themselves) or general public (through events such as election) am not sure who exactly you would like to evaluate these judges. we already know the (under) performance of judiciary is what has led to police shooting to kill rather than waste years in corridors of justice or in some cases immediate release of suspects.

constitution review is in Martha Karuas docket, RAO is expressing his views just as you are. the road map you should be following is that provided by Karua

UrXlnc, Even the most sophisticated computers can be hacked. The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in 2007, and we speak a British man is fighting extradition to US where he has been accused of hacking and crashing military computers. He has admitted accessing 97 US military and Nasa computers. US prosecutors also allege that he shut down and rendered inoperable 300 computers at a US navy weapons station at a critical time, immediately after the terror attacks in 2001.

Vikii, am not surprised to hear this buffoon hacked Kalonzo computer. This alley cat is desperate to enter state house at all cost. But he will remain an alley cat forever! Raila is a callous, calculating liar and schemer and he will do anything to gratify his long enduring lust for power. All right minded Kenyans must stand up against this evil threat to our country. Voting for raila is allowing dictatorial to reign over us. Kenya must be kept free from dictatoship!

If demanding accountability and appearing to micro-manage some institutions whose political appointees have no idea how to run, makes Raila a dictator, then I would rather a dictator than a status quo loser who looks for skirts to hide under and backs to ride on.

A peek into Kalonzo's idea of handliing tough issues was his reaction to the prison strike? That is not someone I want to be my president leave alone my MP.

Back to the spying incident. After his sightseeing/shopping/cheering business in Beijing(did he have to be away that long!?), it suddenly dawned on him that he had sunk even deeper into oblivion. What better way to get back to the political limelight than to ride on Raila's popularity and newsworthiness?

BTW Vikii, your beloved idol was the dictator Musalia made reference to. In his wild dreams, the guy wrongly assumed he would get the ODM ticket and started behaving like his mentor baba Moi-bossing other aspirants around.

Seriously Vikii, what tricks does Kalonzo have that Raila would die for to the extent of spying?. You people have to start being honest with yourselves and start telling wiper the painful truth.

Continuing to massage his over-inflated ego is certainly not being helpful.

Well Vikii, have you read about your miserable wannabe president and the many fires he has lit in ukambani? Wavinya Ndeti is young enough to be his daughter, hy fight her? Is it because she defied the wiper wave.

Don't you think it might be a good idea to write an article on how best your 'visionary president to be' can distance himself from the 'domestic' fights. Really doesn't help his presidential ambitions.

BTW tell him to focus on fighting Mwau and Ngilu. Wavinya does not bite....hard. grrrrr...wooof hahahaha

ODM is fixated with kalonzo because they are scared stiff of him.

A combination of Kalonzo and GEMA would almost certainly assure Kalonzo of presidency almost without needing anyone else to join in.

ODM will bluff and run around pretending he is inconsequential but they all know the truth

the only way they can block kalonzo is by robbing him of the GEMA vote, a deed that will be difficult indeed given that most of ODM has been implicated in the ethnic cleansing/genocide of kyuks in the rift.

They bank on the hope that GEMAS wil mythically vote for their own bt as far as I know, most kyuks I know are saying they will vote for Kalonzo if he runs regardless of which other kyuk runs

I pity ODMers. I really do. And thats even assuming that ODM remains intact. If any of the big two walk-away (Lunjes or Kales) then Raila is assured of a resounding defeat. and now as it seems both seem to be on the verge of departing.

heeehehehee, who will they vote for karua, uhuru, kalonzo, bifwoli or jirongo?

Vikii,

Kalonzo does not have the balls to lead this country. He is just being used by central to further their political agenda. Every time i look at this fellow, i see Moi.
